Happy #BlackHistoryMonth Family!

#WakandaForever continues as Black Panther smashes box office records. By now the age old thinking that African American films do not make money as wide releases or even overseas should be done and over with right?

But that’s not what makes this film great. What impressed me the most about the film was the strength, the intelligence and breadth of space the black women of Wakanda occupied in the movie. They were full human beings with complete agency over their lives. What was particularly impressive was T’Challa’s little sister Shuri, the princess tech mastermind behind all of the newest innovations of Wakanda. It was beautiful, it was whole, and she no doubt had some of the best one liners of the movie.

But there are so many Shuri’s within our grasp, it’s a wonder we don’t appreciate them more often. On the program today, Dr. Tracee Jameson-Hooks, a research Engineer for the NASA Goddard Space flight program. She’ll talk about the need for more African American women in STEAM fields. Because wouldn’t we want to live like Wakandans?
