“If you do not go after what you want, you’ll never have it” – Nora Roberts
She has been hailed as someone to watch in the run-off in 2018 as possibly the first black woman Governor, and she’s running in the state of Georgia. Stacey Abrams, the product of two ministers with a passion for education, opens up about how her life has fueled her beliefs in how we should move forward as a country.
In the first installment of Spotlight on Enlighten Me, the former Georgia House Minority Leader will join me, and you may be surprised at how she views being a single black woman running for office. Her story is inspiring for everyone who seeks to challenge themselves in life, and I hope you find it informative and enlightening.

“I write for those women who do not speak, for those who do not have a voice because they were so terrified, because we are taught to respect fear more than ourselves. We’ve been taught that silence would save us, but it won’t.” – Audre Lorde

As the debate over healthcare looms in the form of “repeal and replace”, or “just repeal” or “try to replace at another more convenient time”, the good folks over at Rewire News have peered into a byproduct of the debate. Abortion service providers have dwindled in the past 10 years as anti-choice activists in congress and senate continue to create legislation that restricts these services. The result? Centers take on more patients and anti-choice advocates concentrate their protests. Care in Chaos takes a look at one such center in North Carolina where the administrator there is at her brink. I hope you check it out.
On the program today, the women behind the doc: Calla Hales, the 27 year old administrator who works at the abortion clinic and Lindsay Beyerstein an award winning investigative journalist and the woman behind the lens. They will join me to talk about the making of the documentary as well as how these top down policies affect the local community.
“I do not wish women to have power over men, but over themselves.” – Mary Shelley

Enlighten Me has been on vacation these past couple of weeks enjoying graduations and family reunions. As I get back into the swing of things, I thought i’d look back at some recent interviews that continue to have an impact on me.
Tasha Eurich, author of Insight, shows us that we are not as self aware as we think. She’ll also outline steps on how to truly see ourselves clearly. I can’t stress enough how it could probably help a lot of people in the political sphere right about now.
Also, recently The Trump administration has erected an election commission to look at voting that has garnered widespread criticism. In April, US District Court judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos ruled in Texas recently that SB 14, the voter ID Bill passed in 2011 was passed with the intent to discriminate against minority voters. This is something civil rights leaders, voting rights advocates and legal scholars have been fighting against for years. It begs the question, would this same level of advocacy be applied to other cases like this across the country.
On the program, Ezra Rosenberg, Co-Director of the Voting Rights project at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law where he oversees all voting rights litigation will explain what this means for Texas and other voter ID laws that have popped up over the years.
It’s sunny outside and today is my birthday. What else do you expect?
I hope you enjoy this summer rewind!
