I don’t think it’s necessary to shout if you have a good story. But I also don’t think you should shy away from being bold in the statement that you’re making. – Nancy Gibbs

Hey Family,

What was that? You enjoyed the State of The Union drinking game a little too much last night and now you are struggling at work today?

I’m sorry I couldn’t process much after I saw Melania walk out in that white pantsuit. It reminded me of something but I couldn’t [theresistance] quite [the resistance] put [the resistance] my [the resistance] finger [the resistance] on [the resistance] it [the resistance].

So much was unspoken at President Trump’s State of the Union speech that I could barely pay attention to the actual words coming out of his mouth. I heard something about DACA, real Americans and Guantanamo Bay. Dassit.

I kept paying attention to the Congressional Black Caucus and rest of the Democrats “dressed in all black like the omen” and Melania’s suffragist revolt. We’ll talk about this and more as we look at the fate of immigration with Nicole Svajlenka, Senior Policy Analyst for Immigration at the Center for American Progress. Also on the program, Jen Stanley and Sophia Resnick of Rewire on how far-right wing policy is taking shape in our government.

Hey Family,

Seems like the scope of Robert Mueller’s investigation into this last presidential election just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  He might just end up interviewing everybody in the White House. Clutch my pearls.

Among the many issues that surround our political system in general, one such quandary that has confused many are Donald Trump’s business dealings, tax information and a host of personal ethical controversies.  Questions of whether any of this is legal continuously swirl. As we have seen, this past election blew the can open to the many loopholes that still exist.

On the program, Daniel Weiner, Senior Counsel of the Democracy program at the Brennan Center, will talk about his latest report, Strengthening Presidential Ethics Law, a comprehensive look at the ways in which the laws surrounding Presidential ethics and their code of conduct should be fixed.

Hey Family,

With the government spending bill looming large and DACA seemingly being used (or not used) as bargaining chips–going off the deep end doesn’t even feel like the right terminology to use.

A he said/he said between Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and the administration over the President’s use of “shithole” to describe some African countries as well as Haiti and Salvador have left many immigrants, especially those who supported this administration, feeling wronged.  But immigrants make up the fabric of this country.  On the program today, Nicole Svajlenka, Senior Policy Analyst for Immigration at the Center for American Progress will talk about the fate of DACA recipients, the likelihood of a deal being brokered as part of the spending bill and the administrations long term goals.

Hey Family,

Enlighten Me took a much needed winter break but we’re back! It looks like were just in time to people watch Oprah’s run for president. Wait, what? How did we get here?

I love Auntie Queen Oprah, really I do, but I don’t know if idolizing personalities is the way to go. Even though I believe Oprah would have us all living our best life.

I also don’t believe in living in a theocratic state whether that be on the more progressive or conservative side.  There are pluses and minuses on both sides of the aisle. Which is why i’m having Rewire’s Jenn Stanley and investigative reporter Sofia Resnick on the program to talk about their latest project, Choice/Less — Marching Toward Gilead: The Rise of American Theocracy, a two part podcast on Operation Save America (OSA), an organization “committed to a United States in which abortion, homosexuality, Islam, and anything else its leadership considers “ungodly” is a criminal offense.”  They reveal the alarming ways OSA’s far-right ideology is worming its way into state and federal government.
