06-19-19 – Juneteenth

“I had reasoned this out in my mind; there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty, or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other; for no man should take me alive; I should fight for my liberty as long as my strength lasted, and when the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me.”– Harriet Tubman

Hey Fam,

It’s a celebration!!! Happy Juneteenth America! Let it be known, that on this day in 1865, the final announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas was made for the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America.

So as Ta-Nehisi Coates, Danny Glover and others testify on the Case for Reparations in America, let us reflect on how far we’ve come and the work still ahead of us.

Also on the program, artist Goldie Patrick’s riveting play HERStory was a rollercoaster down memory lane and a testimony to the role of women in Hip Hop. I’ll talk to her about how she curates black women’s history for the culture.
